Obtaining the cheapest Auto Insurance for Teens

Most adults dread the time when their child reaches the age to drive. The cost of a car and the really bad thing more auto insurance. According to AAA teens between the ages of 15-17 cost America $34 billion annually in accident related cost. In 2006 teens between the ages of 15-17 were involved in 974,000 crashes.  Scary isn’t? It is bad enough that we have to worry about our teens driving and what they are doing, but now we have to worry about higher insurance rates. Well if you follow these few things you should be able to get cheaper auto insurance for your teen.
  • First raise the deductible from $100 to $500. If you do this you can lower the insurance premium from 10% to 20%. This makes it easier if you have the money to do this at the beginning of paying for the auto insurance. The more you pay the lower the premium.
  • Make sure the car you are going to insure is not an expensive car. The more expensive the car the more you will pay on insurance. If your teens car is more expensive then yours switch cars. There is a big difference between a sports car and a station wagon. Remember your insurance is cheaper then your teens. It could save you up to $1,000 or more.  Also make sure you buy a car that has a lot of safety features. That will make it more likely not to be on the high hazard list. Which will cost higher premiums?
  • Add your teen to your insurance policy if you can. It could save you another 15% on your premium. A lot of insurance company’s give a discount for the more you insure. Just make sure your auto insurance covers everything.
  • Enroll your teen in driver training and have them finish the course. If you do this you could save up to 10% to 15% percent on their insurance. That is a bonus from the insurance company’s to help with safe driving. Also it will give you a piece of mind. You will have the satisfaction of not having to train your teen yourself.
  • Encourage your child to get good grades. It will help them get into college but it may also help get a discount on insurance. In certain States insurance company’s give discounts to teens with good grades. Some give up to 10%. Check with your insurance provider and the State.
  • Get your child to chip in. When they reach 15 in most states they can get a job. It will show them responsibility. And it may teach them the value of a dollar. They wont go out on spending sprees if they realize how much things cost. It will also take a lot of financial burden off your back.
  • Get multiple quotes. The more quotes you get the cheaper you could find insurance. You difference in the company’s could be more than $1,000 a year; costing or saving you more then $10,000 in a ten year period. That is a lot of money. You could be saving that for a vacation or retirement. Maybe even a graduation present for your teen.
  • Try shopping online. Most insurance company’s can be found online now. You don’t have to settle for companies in your town or neighborhood, city or state. It takes just minutes to get quotes. Some sites will give you quotes from at least 10 different companies. Just make sure you have a calculator, paper and pencil handy. You may won’t to keep a list of the quotes and figure out how much it may be for the whole year. Also make sure you look at how many payments that can be the difference between $10.00 and a $1,000 a year.
  • Another good thing to do is have your teen check out a few teen driving sites. Like this one www.teendriving.com. On this site they give tips on how to be a safe driver and defensive driving tips. You can also find tips on purchasing a car.
  • Make sure your teen follows all driving restrictions on their license. In some states there is a restriction on teens having to drive with a licensed adult. Also encourage your child to not get tickets. The more tickets he or she gets makes your insurance premiums go up. It also may cause you insurance company to drop you. Making it hard and expensive to obtain new insurance.
  • You can also get a stand alone policy. This makes it the teens responsibility to pay for it. That way there is no financial responsibility on your part.  This will also teach him or her how to save money.
Well if you follow these few tips you should be able to obtain cheaper auto insurance for your teen.
